The Ultimate Checklist for choosing the right Retirement Village

TheVillageYeronga131

Are you at the stage of thinking about how and when you are going to move from your career and into retirement?  Or are you, and your siblings, considering the next move for your parents.

Planning for retirement can be a daunting process – but it doesn’t have to be.

A recent survey of 4,115 retirement village residents has reinforced what many in the sector already know – most residents are happy with village life. In fact, 84% reported high levels of satisfaction, with security, social connections, and reduced home maintenance topping the list of what they value most.

The survey was conducted jointly by the Residents Associations across each state and territory in Australia late last year in response to the ABC’s 7:30 Report which suggested retirement village contracts are a form of “corporatised elder abuse”.

There are a range of reasons people decide to move into retirement living. And if you need some guidance picking the right village, we’ve outlined the six fundamental things to consider in your search.

Location, location, location.

This is an important consideration. We know that many Australians choose to stay in the area they love, on average, within 12km of their former home. While there are obvious benefits to staying in your town, there’s nothing wrong with bucking the trend either. This is your time – so ask yourself, where have you always dreamed of living? Some people desire warmer coastal Queensland living, whereas others prefer the convenience of being closer to a capital city with warmer temperature.

Think about your lifestyle requirements

Have you thought about your lifestyle, and what kind of home will best suit? Apartments are a fantastic option for people who like the convenience of a lock-up-and-leave home with minimal maintenance required. Or maybe you’re a green thumb who would prefer a house with a garden. Do you have a pet? Make sure to check your new home is suitable for your four-legged companion.

Consult with family

Always seek a second opinion – or third, or fourth! While it’s important you’re happy with the village you choose, it’s good to consult with those who know you best. They may think of factors you hadn’t considered, such as the facilities – are they family-friendly? Will you be regularly hosting guests or grandchildren? Some facilities have policies around this which are important to consider.

Make a list of non-negotiables

So, you’ve had a think about location and lifestyle, and you’ve spoken to your friends and family. Now it’s time to put pen to paper and write your list of must-haves. For most people, amenities top the list. Here at The Village, our residents can enjoy bowling greens, a gym, café, cinema and more, all on-site. But, just as important as the on-site facilities is what you can find nearby. Think about the location of the closest doctor, dentist and shopping centre. It’s also good to factor in distance to town and public transport options. Once you identify what’s most important, you can begin to narrow your search.

Take a tour

After identifying your non-negotiables, pick a few key places that fit the criteria and then book a tour. This is the best way to get the feel of your potential new home and identify whether it’s the right option for you. Take a look inside, meet the residents and have a chat with the sales staff. It’s important to meet the building manager, as you will be in close contact during this process. Make sure to visit multiple retirement villages so you can compare the pros and cons.

Think Long Term

Though you may be in great shape now, it pays to consider what your future needs might be. Are you looking at a home with stairs? While you may be jumping up two at a time now, if your mobility becomes restricted, stairs could prove to be a challenge. Have a think about all of the facilities on offer, and any services you may require in future.
