“Finding your Voice” – Meet our Residents, The Village Coorparoo

The Village Coorparoo Dennis

Ready to tune into your best self? It’s never too late to join a choir and discover the power of music.

Music is a universal language that knows no age, and the greatest instrument of all? Your voice. Joining a choir is a powerful activity that offers numerous benefits, from enhanced well-being to social connection and simply being a whole lot of fun. It’s also easy to pick up at any age and any skill level – all you need to do is show up! In the case of The Village Coorparoo Choir’s current Musical Director Dennis Harrison, music had always been part of his life, beginning with piano lessons as a child before picking up the clarinet for a year in his teens, and then the trombone later in life. But singing in a choir was a completely new experience for him until retirement. “Coming to The Village was an opportunity for me to grow and discover things that I hadn’t previously been able to do,” he said.

From ensemble to conductor, Dennis’ new found love for the hobby has even extended beyond The Village, having joined two external choirs including The Greatest Show Choir led by the award winning Jonathon Welch AM. He encourages all residents to experience the magic of group singing for themselves. “The joy I get from seeing the participation of choir members who attend weekly rehearsals and the adrenaline charge from the well received concerts is what keeps me going.”
